What this tip calculator is for
The check lands on the table and the mental math begins: how much should the tip be, what’s the grand total, and how do we split it so nobody overpays? This tool answers all three at once. Enter the bill, pick a tip percentage, say how many people are sharing, and you instantly see the tip, the total, and each person’s share.
It shines when you’re out with friends and want to split the bill evenly, when you’re traveling and unsure what’s customary, or when you just want to round to a clean number so no one is chasing loose change. Everything is calculated right in your browser — no data is ever sent anywhere.
How to use it
- Bill amount: the total shown on the check.
- Tip percentage: tap one of the quick buttons (10, 15, 18, 20 or 25%) or type any percentage you like into the field.
- Number of people: how many are splitting it. Dining alone? Leave it at 1.
- Round the total per person up: tick this box if you’d rather each share land on a whole number instead of an awkward amount with cents.
The results show the total tip, the grand total, the total per person, and each person’s tip separately.
How the math works
The tip is a percentage of the bill. With a bill B and percentage p, the tip is B × p / 100, the grand total is B + tip, and each person pays that total divided by the number of diners.
Worked example
A bill of 1000, an 18% tip, split among 4 people:
- Total tip: 1000 × 18 / 100 = 180
- Grand total: 1000 + 180 = 1180
- Total per person: 1180 / 4 = 295
- Tip per person: 180 / 4 = 45
Change it to a 2350 bill at 15% split among 3, and the total per person comes to 900.83. Turn on rounding and each person pays 901, so the group leaves a touch more tip.
Tipping customs around the world
| Place | Typical custom |
|---|---|
| United States and Canada | 15 to 20% is expected at sit-down restaurants |
| Dominican Republic | A 10% service charge is already added to the check; extra is optional |
| Spain and much of Europe | Not required; people round up or leave small change |
| Mexico | Around 10 to 15%, depending on service |
| Japan | Tipping is not customary and can even feel awkward |
Frequently asked questions
Is the tip calculated before or after tax?
There are two schools of thought. The more generous, common approach in the United States is to tip on the full post-tax total. The other view is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal only, since tax isn’t part of the service. Both are accepted; this calculator uses whatever amount you type in, so you choose the base.
How much should I tip in the Dominican Republic?
Most restaurants already add a mandatory 10% service charge to the check, on top of the ITBIS sales tax. That 10% isn’t a tip you decide on — it’s automatic. Leaving anything extra is entirely optional and usually reserved for service that stood out.
What if everyone ordered different things?
This calculator splits the bill evenly, which is the fastest option when people spent roughly the same. If one person ordered far more or less, the fair move is to total each person’s items separately and apply the same tip percentage to each subtotal.
Can I use it for delivery or a taxi?
Yes. Enter the service amount as the “bill”, pick the percentage you want to leave, and you’re done. For a single payer, just keep the number of people at 1.
